Hidden Power

Hidden Power is often one of the most confusing moves for trainers because although it shows up in the game listed as a normal type move it can be any type except normal, can be either a physical or a special move in earlier generations, and even varies in power. In this guide there will be a step-by-step process for learning the math behind the move as well as a reference section at the end for the best ways to get what type you want at certain power levels.

Verifying your Power

There are several ways to check what type of Hidden Power your Pokémon has. In Black and White you can take your Pokémon to the man in the Pokémon center in Mistralton City. You can also engage in a fight with a Kecleon. When you use hidden power the Kecleon will change its type to match that of your Hidden Power. If either of these two methods are unavailable to you (you are playing FireRed/LeafGreen for example) you will have to fight against a variety of pure-typed Pokémon and see whether the move is super-effective or not and proceed from there. A good place to start is with the pure psychic type Abra. If for example your move is super effective on Abra and then deals regular damage to a normal/flying type like Pidgey your move must be dark (i.e. bug wouldn’t be very effective against Pidgey and ghost wouldn’t have hit at all). Unfortunately, there is no in-game method for checking the power of your attack.

Prior to Diamond and Pearl the following types of Hidden Power used the Pokémon’s Attack stat to calculate damage: Bug, Fighting, Flying, Ghost, Ground, Poison, Rock, and Steel. While the following types of Hidden Power use the Pokémon’s Special Attack stat to calculate damage: Dark, Dragon, Electric, Fire, Grass, Ice, Psychic, and Water. However, in the more recent games Hidden Power is always a Special move.

The Math

The type and power of Hidden Power is based on the Individual Values (IVs) of the Pokémon.* In order to calculate the type of the Hidden Power you must first know your Pokemon’s IVs which you will probably have to use an online calculator for since there is no in-game way to see the IVs. Start with zero. If the IV is an even number add zero, but if it is odd do the following:

  • add 1 if HP is odd
  • add 2 if Attack is odd
  • add 4 if Defense is odd
  • add 16 if Special Attack is odd
  • add 32 if Special Defense is odd
  • add 8 if Speed is off

Once you have your sum look for the following range your value resides to see your type:

  • 0-4: Fighting
  • 5-8: Flying
  • 9-12: Poison
  • 13-16: Ground
  • 17-20: Rock
  • 21-25: Bug
  • 26-29: Ghost
  • 30-33: Steel
  • 34-37: Fire
  • 38-41: Water
  • 42-46: Grass
  • 47-50: Electric
  • 51-54: Psychic
  • 55-58: Ice
  • 59-62: Dragon
  • 63: Dark

To determine the power of Hidden Power again start with zero. For each IV stat divide by 4 and if you get a remainder that is not 2 or 3 (0.5 or 0.75 in decimal) then add zero. Otherwise add the following:

  • add 1 for HP
  • add 2 for Attack
  • add 4 for Defense
  • add 16 for Special Attack
  • add 32 for Special Defense
  • add 8 for Speed

Now, plug your value for the SUM into the following equation: (SUM*(40/63))+30 Ignore any decimals and the whole number you have left will be your power value.

Let’s do an example. Say you have a Pokémon with the following IVs: 12 HP/3 Atk/25 Def/31 Sp.A/10 Sp.D/18 Spe. To find the type of its Hidden Power you would start with zero. Since HP is even we add zero (0+0=0). Attack is odd so according to the list above we add two (0+0+2=2). Defense is also odd so this time we add four (0+0+2+4=6) and so on until we get a sum of 22 (0+0+2+4+16+0+0=22). Since 22 is in the range 21-25 the type will be bug. Next to check the power we again start with zero. We divide HP’s value of 12 by 4 and get 3.0. Since the remainder is zero and not 0.5 or 0.75 we add zero. Next we divide Attack’s value of 3 by 4 to get 0.75. Since this remainder is one of the ones we are looking for we look at the list above and add 2 because it corresponded to Attack. Dividing Defense’s value of 25 by 4 yields 0.25 which isn’t 0.5 or 0.75 either so we again add zero to the sum and so on until we obtain a sum of 58 (0+0+2+0+16+32+8=58). Now plug 58 into the SUM equation to get (58*(40/63))+30=66.825. Ignore the decimals to get a power value of 66.

* Please see our other guide on IVs and breeding if you would like a further explanation of IVs and how to obtain certain ones.

The Breeding

The best possible IVs to obtain the given Hidden Power type with a power of 70 are as follows in standard HP/Atk/Def/Sp.A/Sp.D/Spe format. Useful alternatives are also listed, but the first one is generally preferred as it takes in to consideration which stat(s) you will more likely want a 31 in. Please also note that it is not possible to obtain a perfect Speed IV if you want to obtain the Fighting, Fire, Psychic or Rock types regardless of power level. Also listed are IV spreads if you want to achieve a power of 59 or 60 for when you want to utilize a Pokémon with the ability Technician. Both power options are included because using a power of 59 tends to require fewer IV reductions. Again, the standard HP/Atk/Def/Sp.A/Sp.D/Spe format is used. For the IVs of power 70 any redundant alternatives were removed.

If you aren’t using RNG abuse you will find the above table intimidating, because if you have read the IV breeding guide you will know that it is extremely difficult to control more than 3 IVs when breeding. Not to fear! If you look through the table above you will probably start to see patterns in how the IVs are assigned. In fact, if the Special Defense, Special Attack, and Speed IVs are odd numbers after you divide them by two you will always get a base power of at least 65. You can use the below listing to figure out the best IVs those three stats should be for the greatest chance of getting the correct Hidden Power.
